Why does GTA 5 make such a basic movement option feel so situational? Pressing the crouch input is easy, but knowing when to use it is the part that saves a stealth approach from turning into a messy firefight. Even if you buy GTA 5 Money to speed up an Online loadout, crouching won't replace positioning, patience, or a solid escape route. It's a small tool, not a magic invisibility switch.
The controls are simple
While on foot, press Left Ctrl on PC to enter the low stealth stance. On PlayStation, click L3; on Xbox, click the left stick. Press the same input again to stand normally. GTA 5 can ignore that input near vehicles, ladders, doors, mission prompts, and other context actions, so take a couple of steps away before assuming something is wrong.

Crouching versus cover
This is the mistake I see most often in GTA 5: players crouch in open space and expect the same protection they'd get by snapping to a wall. Crouching lowers your profile and changes your movement pace; cover attaches you to an object and lets you peek, aim, and break enemy sightlines. During a heavy DPS exchange, the cover system is almost always the stronger option. Save the low stance for approaching a corner, slipping beneath a low obstacle, or waiting just outside a guard's view.
Use it for timing, not constant movement
In GTA Online stealth setups, low movement works best in short bursts. Spend a moment reading patrols, cameras, and the route ahead before you move. From what I've seen, players get caught less often by stopping before each exposed crossing than by trying to crouch-walk an entire room in one go. That also leaves you more room to react if a guard suddenly turns or another player rushes the objective.
1. Crouch before entering a watched lane, not after an enemy has already spotted you.
2. Stop behind a solid object and watch the guard's direction for a full patrol cycle.
3. Move through the opening, then stand up again if you need speed or a faster weapon response.
Laser rooms need a different rhythm
Some GTA Online heist-style areas use moving laser patterns that make crouching matter far more than it does in a normal shootout. Don't stay low from the moment you enter. Watch which beam is actually approaching, wait for the safe lane, then duck only when a horizontal beam needs to pass overhead. Players putting together gear funds through Grand Theft Auto 5 Money can buy plenty of useful equipment, but this section is still about clean timing rather than expensive kit.
What GTA 5 does not give you
There is no freely controlled prone position in regular GTA 5 Story Mode or GTA Online. Your character can crouch, use cover, lean from surfaces, and perform scripted low animations, but you cannot lie flat and crawl across Los Santos like this is a military shooter. I could be wrong but some mission animations seem to confuse players into thinking there's a hidden prone command. There isn't one you can rely on during normal play.
A quick habit that pays off
Practice switching between standing, crouching, aiming, and cover in a quiet alley or parking area before trying it during a high-pressure mission. The useful skill isn't memorizing Left Ctrl or L3-it's recognizing which action GTA 5 wants at that exact moment. Crouch for careful movement, use cover for incoming fire, and stand when speed matters. Simple. But it makes stealth routes feel far less random.
